Commercial Biodiesel Plants

Models on this page are built using Industrial Grade components such as explosion proof pumps, all black iron lines, Integrated control panels, etc.  Processors on this page come in modular units, on steel cage frames, that can be connected together quickly upon arrival.  These have 1-2 common manifolds where fluids come in and go out to simplify connection to your storage tanks, water lines and drain lines.  All the electrical will be completed and integrated into the modular units requiring minimal wiring at your site.  Setup time should be less than a day excluding your storage tanks and building plumbing and electrical.  In other words, once you have your building plumbing in place, it will take about 1/2 day to connect our plants into your system.   Although some of our processors are built with explosion proof components, you will need to ensure the building electrical is explosion proof also if you wish to have a totally explosion proof rated system.

And, with these larger processors, you have the option of purchasing an EZ40 biodiesel processor for $1,000.00 to be delivered immediately, for your crew and yourself to learn and experiment with.  This model can be seen on our smaller processor page and is perfect for learning the process of making biodiesel on a smaller scale.

The  model below will make ASTM 6751 quality fuel with NEW, De-gummed feedstock, or used oil that titrates at levels below 3, or we will work with you to adjust your operating parameters or processor to achieve this.

Note that you MUST wash the fuel (dry wash or water wash) to achieve ASTM standards.  Unwashed fuel will NEVER reach ASTM standards and is actually very poor quality fuel.

EZBiodiesel C375-tk1a System Outline

This system is a complete system from the Oil collection setup to the waste oil and glycerin storage tanks. It does not however include the Biodiesel storage tanks. Perfect for a small farm, municipality or business.  This model IS configured for used oil.  Here are additional details about this system.

The base processor for this system is our Model C375 commercial processor which is built using higher quality components than the homeowner versions, along with using explosion proof pumps and electrical equipment. This model also includes a dry wash system which eliminates all need for water washing, reduces processing hands on time and allows for processing in fewer days. It also eliminates any chance of emulsions, while still producing ASTM quality fuel. This system is very expandable for future growth.

Dimensions -

  • Processor: 52w" x 81h"

  • Methoxide Tank: 32" x 51h"

  • As mounted in the Skid frame/cage - approximately 5'w x 8'L x 8'H

  • Weight, estimated: 2000 lbs

  • Total size is larger due to additional storage tanks, etc

Capacity - This system will process up to 375 gallons every day, 2600 gallons per week or up to 130,000 gallons per year. (actual yield will be closer to 365 gallons per batch due to draining losses). System can be expanded easily to produce much larger amounts.

Electrical -

This model will be completely wired so that all that's required on site is to connect one main power line to our built in service panel.

Power Requirements: 240V, 50amp

Pumps -

This model comes standard with 4 pumps totals.

  1. Processor pump is a very high quality, Non Explosion Proof TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) centrifugal pump which flows at approximately 70 gpm.

  2. Methoxide mixing pump is also a high quality Explosion proof diaphragm air powered pump.

  3. Drywash system pump will be a metering pump as flow rate must be controlled to achieve thorough cleaning.  NON explosion proof.

  4. Glycerin pump sized accordingly, and NON explosion proof.

Highlights of this system -

  • Processor - Comes with a 500 gallon Polyethylene cone bottom tank that will process up to 375 gallons of Biodiesel every 24 hours or over 120,000 gallons per year. Installed on a sturdy steel skid cage frame. Frame is forklift able and surrounds the entire processor and methoxide pump. Does not surround settling tanks, etc.

  • Electrical – All electrical components will be mounted to this skid frame in a commercial grade electrical panel.  All that will be required to connect the electrical will be to run a 50 amp 240V service line to our control panel. All other electrical will be complete when it arrives.

  • Plumbing – Uses 1" & 1 1/4" black iron pipe.  All inlet and outlet lines for WVO, glycerin, methanol & Biodiesel will terminate in 1-2 common manifolds. All plumbing lines will be completely labeled.

  • Control Panel- will have a custom control panel containing the pump timer, water pre-wash controller (for methanol removal prior to dry washing), indicator and warning lights, digital temperature controls, etc. The 5% water pre-wash will be fully automated as the water must be added during the last 15 minutes of the processing time. Will still require manual draining of the water.

  • In line Heater – Comes with an in line heater with 3,000 watts of total heat & a thermostat, safety switches, control panel, indicators, etc.

  • Oil collection pump and tank - Includes an oil collection pump that will pump 150 gpm with Goodyear fuel hoses, ball valve shut offs, etc. Tank is a 350 gallon pickup tank. If you will be using new oil we can delete this option. Larger tanks available.

  • Settling and storage tank - Comes with 4 settling tanks. These 500 gallon tanks are the tanks you will pump the collected WVO into after collection. Allows the oil to settle out the watery oil and the waste debris in the oil before transferring into the processor.

  • Waste collection tank – This 175 gallon tank allowsSteel biodiesel dry wash column you to transfer the gunk settled out above into this tank to be disposed of later. Can be disposed of through a grease renderer, land filled, or possibly composted.

  • Glycerin storage tank. Comes with a 500 gallon Glycerin storage tank. You will produce 80 gallons of glycerin per 375 gallon batch. Includes a dedicated pump to more quickly pump the glycerin from the processor into the glycerin tank.

  • Drywash system – This is a Lead/Lag system with (2) 12” columns for the most efficient dry washing. Utilizes the latest, most technologically advanced media available, known as Thermax T45 resin. Will process 24-48,000 gallons per media change. Adds roughly 10 cents per gallon to the processing cost. We can include the option of (2) lead lag systems to double the media life if requested.

  • Complete Supplies – Comes with a complete, premium titration kit, stainless steel scale for measuring catalyst, and full safety gear.

On site setup and Training – We will come to your facility for 3-4 days of onsite setup and training. We will supervise the installation and provide hands on training during this period to help you process the first batch of Biodiesel. Available for US or International orders, although there is an extra charge for International hands on training. Additional training time is available.

All tanks will be fully plumbed and ready to use.  We will completely mock up the entire setup on site before shipping. Photos of this setup will be taken for reference during setup.  Shipping is extra. Call for a shipping quote.

Price includes on site setup supervision.  This will require at least one helper supplied by yourself as well as all tools needed to complete the installation. May require a plumber also if additional lines must be run for methanol, biodiesel, etc.  On site setup is for Supervision and general setup only and not any actual electrical or plumbing labor.  You will have to supply the electrical hookup by a certified electrician. This will require running a service line of 150a capacity to our control panel.  Water will also have to be plumbed by a plumber to the location we designate and compressed air must be plumbed into the work area.

A fully detailed drawing of the installation location will be required before we ship the processor in order to detail the location of the water outlet, etc. We can send a building layout form to you if needed.  You would need to supply the methanol storage containers if you don't get it in 55 gallon drums. You will also need to supply the finished biodiesel storage tank. Requires an air compressor of at least 15cfm to run some of the pumps.

Waste oil Free Fatty Acid content, FFA, must test lower than an average of 2-3. If oil tests higher, we can provide a chemical which will lower the FFA to the needed level for an additional fee.

We recommend a rolling ladder with platform for working on and operating the biodiesel processor. We can include one in the bid if needed. Or you can have a catwalk built if you desire, (can be included in the bid).

The oil collection barrels are not included.

Oil collection lids - OPTIONAL - Oil collection lids. These locking lids can be fitted to 55 gallon barrels and will pre-filter the larger debris from your WVO and also prevent oil theft.

What do you need to supply with our Large Biodiesel Plants?

(model C180 & larger)

Here's a tentative list of items you will need to supply

  • Methanol delivery lines (to deliver methanol to the methoxide mixer.  The methoxide pump on your system can draw the methoxide in if lines are plumbed to the area of our processor)

  • Methanol & the storage tanks

  • New oil feedstock storage tanks if using new oil (we will discount for the WVO tanks if you do this)

  • Finished fuel storage tanks

  • Catalyst & the storage vessel (you will use roughly a 5 gallon bucket of catalyst per 375 gallons, or about 25 lbs per batch)  We highly recommend KOH as it dissolves in about 10% the time of LYE unless you are in a high humidity area.  Then Lye is recommended.  The KOH must be kept 100% sealed and dry.

  • Vent stack to connect the methanol vents to.  We just need a 1 1/2" or larger pipe that goes to the outdoors.  We'll have all the tanks vented on the skid system, but that will need to be run outdoors, or to the methanol recovery system.

  • You may also want a methanol recovery system for the glycerol.  We are working on a system for this, but estimated release date is late 2009.

  • Wastewater disposal method.  If using a system with a Dry Wash column, you will still use 5% water for each batch (compared to 100-120% for water washing) but the water ends up in the glycerol layer so no water drain is needed.

  • You may want to invest in a Gas Chromatograph as these are the only way to test for ASTM quality in house.  You can outsorce your testing also.  For some sources for gas Chromatographs try HERE or HERE.

  • EPA Certification- can be done ONLY after making a batch of biodiesel and passing the ASTM test.  See HERE for more information.

Other considerations are you will likely need a forklift to move totes and barrels around, a computer nearby to run titration calculations when using used oil and an area to store the used oil, finished biodiesel, glycerin and waste unusable oil.

Building requirements -

These are just some guidelines.  You will have to set your building up to conform to local & national regulations.

You will have to provide the necessary electrical, water, sewer, oil storage tanks, finished fuel storage, fuel transfer lines, etc.

  • Electrical - most of our larger processors require a 240V, single phase, 150 - 200 amp service capacity.  In order to maintain the explosion proof integrity of the system, your processing area will need to be made explosion proof electrically.  Consult a fire suppression company and certified electrician for assistance.

  • Sewage - If using a system with a Dry Wash column, you will still use 5% water for each batch (compared to 100-120% for water washing) but the water ends up in the glycerol layer so no water drain is needed.

  • Ventilation - capable of safely venting any methanol spills or accidents.  Especially important in the methoxide mixing area.  Or you may want to construct a separate room with separate ventilation & fire suppression just for the methoxide mixer.

  • Fire Suppression system -  Ask your local Fire Marshall or fire suppression service for requirements in your area.  You may also wish to invest in a methanol detector as a first alert system in the event of an unmanned operational spill or leak.

  • Water - will require water lines near the processor that can be tapped into for the 5% water pre-wash.

  • Catwalk - Larger systems will need a catwalk.  We can contract this out for you locally, or you can arrange it yourself.

Processing Used Oil Commercially

We mention that our processors can handle used oil if set up to do so.  The reason we may charge extra for this is that there are additional requirements for a system to handle used oil and instead of including the price for this in our base price, we opt to keep the cost down and allow you to add it separately.

Some of the additional requirements and considerations are-

  • Pre-filtering - depending on the quality of the used oil you will be using, it may require a filtration system for the incoming WVO.  The pre-filtering process may involve additional tanks for pre-settling, followed by filtration.

  • De-watering- Used oil by nature has water in it from the frying processes.  The water must be removed either by your supplier, or by yourself, which may require additional equipment.  The water removal equipment would likely be a flash evaporation system which is fairly expensive by itself. This may also add to electrical consumption as the flash evaporation is done at high temperatures.

  • Acid Esterification- Oil that titrates above about 2 - 3 may require an acid esterification process, which adds equipment, time and materials.  This process is then followed by the usual Transesterification process.  Or we may be able to accomplish this via a new method involving an additive that removes the additional free fatty acids.

  • Two Stage Processing- by processing using a 2 stage method, we can handle slightly higher titrating oil of up to an acid number of approximately 2-4.

  • Additional materials- Requires up to double the amount of catalyst and slightly higher amounts of methanol

  • Time - Also may require additional adjustments to the process and system to get your fuel into spec due to unknown components of your feedstock.  WVO is often contaminated with numerous other chemicals such as cleaners, stabilizers, tallow etc.  May require us to work with you much longer to get your system to produce ASTM quality fuel.
